Touring on road bicycles has become more and more popular. When I was young, I first recall seeing men on touring bicycles climbing the highways through the White Mountains in New Hampshire. I was intrigued watching these riders climbing the long inclines for miles on end without stopping. Loving the outdoors and especially the mountains, I knew this was the only way to really enjoy the magnificent views. That was when I noticed the type of bicycle they were riding was much different then the mountain bike I owned.
More recently I met a man in his late 50’s who lived in the north east. Each summer he would fly with his bicycle to the west coast. Then he’d spend a month riding across the country coming home. Needless to say, his bicycle was outfitted with touring bags and other accessories. As the sport’s popularity has risen, so has the demand for touring bicycles. In the past, the only place to locate a tour bicycle was at an expensive specialized bike shop which would usually be limited to one make of bicycle. Usually these local shops are quite expensive. Lets face it, the price of touring bikes simply put them out of reach for younger people just entering the sport.
I recall traveling a couple hours to find the specific Schwinn road bike I was searching for. Fortunately today, that is not the case. You can find all the biggest names in touring bicycles on the internet. The additional benefit is most can be found at very reasonable prices also. The interest in bicycle touring has also given rise to the availability of specialized bicycle parts, accessories and bicycle clothing. You would be hard pressed to find adult bicycle accessories and clothing at your local discount store. But this is not the case online.
The first upgrade that long distance touring requires is a way to carry your personal gearand supplies on long trips. The popularity of touring has provided riders a huge variety of specialized bicycle parts and accessories. It is quite easy to find all types of bicycle parts and bicycling apparel for your long trips. Serious bikers can easily upgrade just about their entire bicycle by traveling no further then their PC.
My ideas about electric bikes were split between two opposite ends of the spectrum. I thought that they would either be A) novelty bicycles- useless for all practical purposes, or B) synonymous with mopeds- noisy, fast, with pedals just for show. The concept of an electric bicycle was, for all intents and purposes, lost on me. That is, until I found myself riding one…
Electric Bikes: The Reality
Picture this scene, if you will: you’re on an folding electric bike and riding down a country road (or pleasant suburb, or bustling city street- this is your vision here). The wind is in your hair; the pedal-assist is on. And while you’re still pedaling, it feels, well, almost effortless. The gentle hum of the electric motor reassures you that your bike is your partner, willing to do some of the work for you, and, if need be, take over completely for a little while, should you need a short rest.
This is the reality of electric bikes. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? It is. Oh, believe me, it is. It’s a long way for the electric bikes to come. They are neither moped nor novelty, they are simply wonderful machines. All types of riders can find the right e-bike to benefit them during these days. You can turn most any bike into an electric beauty as with conversion kits like Bionx. As you know you’ll get to your destination in a timely manner the electric bikes can travel at about 18mph for 10-25 miles per charge. You can find an e-bike with throttle control depending on your needs, letting you control a purely pedal-assist bike or the amount of power which assists you based on the pressure of your own pedaling. Either way, electric-powered bicycles make cycling less strenuous, allowing you to really enjoy your ride.
Downhill (DH) MTB is a event of mountain biking in which bike riders either for fun, or in a timed event, ride down a course of varying difficulty against other bike riders. The format of a DH MTB event follows a similar setup to that of skiing.
A History of Downhill MTB
The first ever downhill event that took place was won by Alan Bonds having taken place on the now famous Repack Road so called as hub bearings would overheat and brake the grease down during races. That was back in 76 and DH has come a long way since then. DH Events now regularly take place across the globe on a weekly basis particularly in the mountainous areas of countries like the UK or in the summer on disused ski slopes in countries like France and Italy. These are certainly not the only countries though, and the DH World Cup is one of the most popular MTB events each yearly.
DH Mountain Bikes
In addition to the obvious differences in this style of mountain bike riding, there are a number of major differences in the bikes and equipment used by the riders. A downhill MTB Frame will be far more specialised that the normal hardtail mountain bike frame you or I used, and will usually give a much stronger and durable full suspension mountain bike frame. The reason for this is the more extreme trails that a DH mountain bike will be subjected to. The trade off of having a full suspension bike, which is built to a much better standard than a standard MTB is the weight. Whilst a standard MTB would be under thirty pounds in weight, DH bikes can to go over 40 pounds. This above average weight is now however being reduced~coming down~reducing~. Other major differences in the bikes can include the use of disc brakes, a high travel suspension fork (5-6 inches) and different frame shape.
Safety Equipment
Pads and protection is without question needed when racing in the world of DH…. just watch a couple of races and you will soon realise that falls, crashes and injuries are common place and a certain drawback this sport offers. Full body protection, face mask helmets similar those used in motocross are needed otherwise you will not be allowed on the trails or to compete.
Cycling offers us three big Tours. The Tour de France is the most well known of course and the season’s finale comes in the Tour of Spain. The Giro opens the season for the big tours. Mark Cavendish is the surprising early leader thanks to the Team Time Trial. Cavendish, generally considered to be the fastest sprinter in the World, had the team helping him and the fact he was their first member to cross the line meant he took the Maglia Rosa.
It was a surprise therefore when he lost to Pettachi in the first sprint of the Tour and he will surely look for revenge in the later stages but Petacchi took a second stage victory and the Pink Jersey on the third day. Why wasn’t the Isle of Man rider in the sprint today? A little matter of some smallish mountains near the finish line meant he finished down the field.
The Giro is a three week tour and like all tours each day has something different for various types of riders. The advent of the first minor mountain stage will take the jersey off Pettacchi’s back as total time taken is taken into account and he will lose time. The time trialers will come into their own on a couple of stages and the mountain goats will get their way in the mountains although Van De Velde won’t be one of them this year after falling and breaking two ribs today.
Lance Armstrong is also involved and his Twitter Stream suggests he is feeling good although it may well be too much to expect him to come back and be winning at his age?
If you have ever thought about trying to emulate any of these guys then you need to train hard. If you have never tried some of these mountains then watching on TV it is difficult to appreciate the difficulty involved and the dedication needed to do this. The programme here will make your body get the best out of itself. If you want something a little more challenging then consider that these guys do hundreds of miles every day and try to do it yourself. For making sure that you know where you are, your speed, distance and so much more you should get one of these Garmin Monitors too
Dirt Jump is a discipline of mountain biking which replicates that of BMX dirt jumping. A rider will ride at high speeds either on the flat, or down a drop in ramp for an instant hit of speed. Unlike other styles where they are timed, dirt jumping is focused on a scoring system for the stunts conducted on the trail.
The Bikes
Freestyle frames feature a change in geometry than that of normal MTB Frames. A dirt jump frame is commonly made of much stronger and often heavier materials in order to them to stand up to the amount of abuse they are put through.
The Jumps
Double Jumps - Also called gap jump, this is where two separate mounds are setup and the rider will jump a gap between the 2 carrying out a trick. These are the most well known and are often seen at extreme events such as gravity Games.
Tabletop Jumps – These jumps are arranged where there is a slant at the start and finish of a jump with a flat surface in between. This is a bit similar to the double jump but with the middle filled in which makes tabletop jumps more suited for inexperienced bikers who might not complete the jump between double jumps.
Ski – Arranged similar to normal ski jumps where the name is borrowed from, these are long ramps generally arranged on downhill parts of free ride courses where the hill can act as a landing.
Roller – Normally located at the start of a course, these jumps are intended to give the rider extra velocity.
Rhythms - Designed for a rider to manual over them, rhythms are normally grouped together in groups of 3 or more and are small round humps like very large speed bumps.
Spine Jumps – Similar to spines at a skate park, they are constructed of a single earth work with no tabletop or transition in-between. Spines are really good for high jumps.
Berms – This is a curved wall ride which is raised from the earth. Regularly situated on the corners of freeride or downhill tracks to enable the rider to turn without losing too much speed.
Hip – Hip Jumps are designed to make the rider jump at an angle. Again this is a different way to force the biker to turn without a loss of momentum but also shows the technical ability of the rider to choose lines through the course.

The dentist usually has a medical history of the patient available, showing such information as allergies to drugs, and medications used by the patient that might react with those employed in periodontal surgery.
Because the mouth contains many millions of bacteria, all possible precautions are taken to prevent entry of the germs into the tooth socket. Bacterial acid is not the only way in which the tooth enamel may be damaged to permit the entry of decay bacteria which is the primary cause of gum disease. Certain high-acid foods and improper dental care can erode molecules of enamel. Temperature extremes also can produce cracks and other damage to the enamel; some dental scientists have suggested that repeated exposure to rapid temperature fluctuations as eating alternately hot and cold foods or beverages can cause the enamel to develop cracks.
From these cracks, bacteria will start to lurk and begin to multiply and cause damage to teeth and gums. The individual may experience swollen and bleeding gums every time they brush and floss teeth. These are the common symptoms of early gum disease.
The choice of foods and the lack of proper dental care can have an impact on gum health. Dental visits can help you learn the proper ways of caring for teeth and gums.
